Friendship, as defined by Wikipedia, "is a relationship between two or more people who hold mutual affection for each other." As defined by Merriam-Webster is "one attached to another by affection or esteem; a favored companion." According to the Dalai Lama, "friendship is when your love for someone exceeds your need for them."
So what is a friend...?
A friend is not someone you chill with because you have nothing better to do. A friend is not when you have to talk to someone about something you don't particularly care about. They are not someone that you buy a Walmart giftcard for on their birthday because you couldn't think of something better. They are not someone you ditch when their may be something more exciting to do. A friend is not someone that you could care less about.
A friend IS someone you skip a party for to go spend some time with. A true friend is someone you tell your feelings to. You can talk to them about things that you never could with your mother, brother, or partner. A friend is someone you don't talk to because you have to, but because you want to; someone you go out of your way to be with. They are someone you can disagree with, and that very disagreement only brings you closer. A friend is someone who lets you rest your head on their shoulder while you cry. A friend is the person you let cry on your shoulder while you assure them that it's okay even though you both know it may not be. Friendship is when you love someone so much that you genuinely want them to be happy even if it means sacrificing something of yourself for that to happen.
This a what being a friend means to me. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Peace out.
